It's weathering the verge. I'm not convinced it is doing an awful lot but a piece of lead will suffice.
You can remove them and replace with a bargeboard.

If there is nothing inherently wrong with it, why you would want to mess about with changing it?
A timber bargeboard brings with it the faff of altering the verge and ongoing maintenance every three years. And I don't think plastic is a realistic option.
Get someone who knows what they are doing and repair or overhaul it, and not replace.
