I am going to build some cabinets for the garage based on this plan:

I will build the cabinets myself but I am unsure what is best to use for material, plywood or MDF. They need to take a fair amount of weight and abuse so which is stronger?

Finish isn't important as they will be painted. I am thinking MDF because the weight of it will add stability and its cheaper.

Any reason why I should use plywood instead?

Ply is probably 3 times as strong for relative thickness.

The main reason though would be moisture, in a garage which may not be brilliantly heated and or ventilated the moisture will make the mdf sag terribley

Plywood is much stronger, Ian - after all, MDF is only compressed dust, which hates dampness too!
John :)

Thanks chaps.

I only need about 5 sheets so the price difference is only about £50 in total.

I will go with ply - nice to cut up than MDF too!

18mm waterproof ply every time, will outlast mdf regurgitated wood dust.
