We're about to have an asbestos insulation board ceiling removed (by licensed contractors at great expense...) from our integral garage and looking for some advice on how to replace the ceiling afterwards.
Currently the bedroom above the garage is very cold and drafts can be felt both in that bedroom and the rooms surrounding that are traveling through from the garage under the upstairs floors.
We're thinking about replacing the ceiling afterward ourselves to keep costs down but have never done this sort of work before.
Please can someone suggest what insulation is best to use? We're thinking something like Kingspan/Celotex so that it will be easy to wedge in between the joists and form a self-supporting airtight seal while leaving an air-gap below. Any recommendations on what thickness to use or whether we should really be using something else? Do we need to use any form of membrane in the process to prevent condensation issues? Should we be sealing around the edges of the insulation with anything such as tape or expanding foam to make an airtight seal?
We have a number of electrical wires running across the existing ceiling which are pinned to the surface, should they be re-attached as is to the replacement or should they be run above the plasterboard and under the insulation above? Ideally I'd prefer to run them above the plasterboard to make it a tidier finish but I hear that it's a bad idea to have anything other than lighting circuits near insulation for fire risk.
There's a number of hot water pipes/electric cables etc that go up from the boiler in the garage and out into the ceiling void. What's best to use to make an airtight seal around them to prevent drafts entering the rest of the house?
The existing asbestos was obviously used as a fire-break between the garage and the rest of the house, any recommendations as to what we should use to replace this function?
The asbestos is being removed in less than two weeks time so anything we'd need would likely have to be available from Wickes/Jewsons or similar.
In general is the approach we're planning on taking the best one?
