Hello all..... bit of an odd one this.
My next door neighbours recently provided temporary care for a 13 year old girl that was being abused at home. Since shes been with them, shes doing really well at school, is a lot happier and they are trying to do everything they can to offer long term fostering to her. Unfortunately, they only have 3 bedrooms and 2 kids of their own..... the council have stated she MUST have her own room. She is currently sharing a room with the couples daughter. The issue is, they cant afford to move, cant afford any major building works and the council state they wont provide any funding to help them alter their house to make another room.
They council have stated that without her own room, she will enter the care system and will be placed in the next available place.... thay is currently just outside London. (We're near Manchester). The kid has a younger sister that she still sees regularly, but this will end if she gets moved. As you can imagine, its an pretty awful situation and im trying to help them as much as I can.
They have an attached garage, and the most cost effective solution would be to convert it. Im happy to do what work i can - basics really. But all the services are in the garage and moving them elsewhere - particularly is BCO is involved, is above my pay grade.
The 1st hurdle would be moving the gas and electric meters about 4 meters away into the utility room. 1970 built house.
How much work is realistically involved in getting them moved and what kinds of costs? They dont have much money, but are really desperate to give the kid a chance. If she ends up in the system, she'll get swallowed by it. Shes not streetwise at all and has no idea of the world she is about to inhabit.
