Hello,

The garage door of the house we've moved into is missing whatever piece(s) connects the handle to the bar across the top of the door. Apologies for the clumsy explanation. Hopefully the following photos will explain it better than I can...

The only way to open the door is to pull down the metal bar at the top to release the hooks at either end. There is no way to open the door from the outside.

This is a close-up of the internal handle:

And this is the external handle:

I've checked the manufacturer's website but none of the documentation matches the mechanism we've got.

Any help/advice about what I can do to re-connect everything would be very much appreciated.

Thanks. :)

Carlton canopies often deploy wires to pull the locking bar down, so presumably someone has removed the top springs so that it can be opened.

Thanks.

Do you mean that there are springs missing between the handle and the bar?

I presume so, or the door would not open. Does the key turn in the locking plate?
The only way to open the door is to reach up and pull the bar down with your hand. This pulls down the two hooks you can see at either end of the bar in the first photo, releasing the door.

Yes, the key turns in the lock.

Ah, then I suspect some rotten scrote has attempted to break into the garage and the previous owner has remover the pull-wires to prevent any further intrusion. It's very difficult to be precise without being there, but this is my suspicion.

I wish they'd left behind whatever they removed so I could re-fit it. I didn't notice when we looked round the house.

I've found some really thick wire in my toolbox. I might see if that's strong enough to connect the handle to the bar.

Just try 2 lengths of wire to connect the top bar to the lower handle. You will have to juggle about with the length! I've used split key rings to connect the wire to the holes and give a bit of wiggle room.

Length of the inner of a bicycle brake cable, pass it through a cable grip to make a loop at each end, and crimp. As above, a key ring, to attach the loops. You can get a length of the inner wire, from a bike shop.

You can get new cables and extra locks if you are concerned about security, from here https://www.garador.co.uk/media/files/brochures/spares.pdf
Thanks. I'm not concerned about security. I'd just like to be able to open the door from the outside using the handle. (y)

Thanks, both. As per my previous reply, I'll try the wire that I found in my toolbox. If that doesn't work, I'll get some brake cable. That's a good shout.

Quick update: the lock itself appears to be broken: no matter what position the key is in, the handle won't turn.

The replacement lock and handle assemblies from Garador have all been discontinued so I'm now looking for a suitable replacement. I've found several that I think will fit but they're all missing the internal handle.

Would simply tugging the wire, from the inside, not release the catches?

Or, might your internal handle, simply transfer onto a new lock, if they are the same style?

Probably but I haven't attached the wires yet. I wanted to make sure that the key, lock and handles worked before attaching the wires. Even if I can get the wires to work, I still need to be able to open the door from the outside.

I've contacted several parts suppliers but they all stopped selling the parts that I need for this door ages ago.

Image #2 looks like there is a deadlock slider under the internal handle. Have you tried to push the slider up (and then use the key)?
