is it ok to run tw&e in conduit in a garage to power sockets and lighting, but when the conduit reaches the ceiling joist just clipp it direct to the joists? Would this be ok to NIC standards?

Yes No problem with that, you are just providing mechanical protection to the cables that are exposed to the possibility of damage . Just make sure the conduit ends are smooth at the top where the cables exit.

What are NIC standards?

Did you mean to write 'Will this comply with BS7671?'

I presume he meant will it comply with the niceics intepretation of BS7671

Yeah i meant NIC interperatation! They seem to be more stringent with how to interpert BS7671.
Just out of curiosity;
If you went to add an extra s/o to a ring but the ring was supplied with only fuse protection and no RCD, would you say that you could not install a s/o without 1st adding an RCD to s\o's on that ring you were altering? Because that is was NIC have told me, but i was always under the impression that any alteration had to not impair the safety anymore than before you made the alteration, so if it didn't have an RCD then altough recommended i would not have to fit 1.
