Hi,

I am going to be partitioning off a section of my garage and then insulating it. I will be putting 47x50mm battons on the wall, using kinspan/celotex foil backed insulation, followed by plasterboard.

My question is should I use 45mm or 50mm thick insulation board, i.e. should I get the 45mm to allow for tolerences ?, or will the 50mm just compress a bit where there maybe slight incaccuracies in the timber and brickwork ?

By the way its a single skin brick garage.

Will i need a respirator

Thanks

Paul

It wont compress at all really unless the uneven bits are small and pointy. You shouldn't need a respirator, just a dust mask will do.

It would be easier to batton out with 25x50 battons then fit 50mm insulated plasterboard on top..

A dpm such as RIW against the face of any external brick walls with 25mm battens and then a continuous layer of 50mm insulation and then your foil backed plasterboard is a more typical spec. Not insulation between the battens. Otherwise you'll get cold spots at the line of the battens.

This type of board wont compress. If you think space will be tight then use a thinner board. Your 50mm battens might be less than 50mm, but its OK for the insulation to stick out past the battens, but as FMT says this can cause a thermal bridge

A better solution is insulation between and across the battens. Or use an insulated plasterboard across the whole lot

The dust from the cut boards is horrible. Cut it outside if you can and brush the dust off before bringing them in. Use a mask
