Hello, my garage is around 12 ft high and I'm looking at building a small area (roughly 7ft wide and 5ft long) as a loft of sorts to store paint cans, plaster board and timber (basically left overs from past DIY job). I as wondering what size joists people recommend I use?

Google "joist span tables", they usually have variety of loadings to choose from - as it's light storage choose the lowest - even if you do exceed a bit it just means you may have slightly greater deflection (sag in the middle) than would be acceptable in a domestic situation. If you can't be bothered doing that then 4x2 at 400 centres would almost certainly do.
