Hi all,
I have a detached garage built with single skin breeze/concrete blocks. The driveway slopes down so the garage below the adjacent roadway. When it rains, water seeps through the bricks below the DPM (which is about 700mm from the garage floor). There is a lot of water and results in a useless space where anything stored is damp and mouldy.
I believe that tanking would be the most suitable thing here, however all the products I've seen say they need to be applied to bare masonry. Hence the current job of trying to remove the paint from the blocks.
So far I have been semi successful in removing this paint using a combination of paint stripper, angle grinder with wire brush cup, wire brush drill bit, pressure washer and steam.
However I am struggling to get the remaining paint out of the pores of the blocks? As most power tools are working the surface, I've found steam and a hand wire brush to be most effective, however I don't think I have it in me to do this for ~7m2.
I got a quote for sandblasting and it is out of budget at £990.
I guess my questions are:
1) Do I need to remove paint entirely for tanking?
2) Am I missing a more effective way of removing the paint? I don't mind "damaging the blocks?
3) Do I tank up to the DPM? Or over and above it?
4) what's the best way for removing paint from the mortar?
Pictures attached for the current state of play.
Thanks in advance.
