I’m installing a small timber gate

The gate post currently in is 117cm high
If I put a new gate post on the opposite wall, this will mean that the top of the post is approx 18cm higher than the top of the wall

My question is:

Do I use the same post height even though it will be higher than the wall?

Or do I bring the post to the top of the wall?

I always think it’s best having the posts the same height but would this look stupid protruding cm above the wall?

Pic below is the CURRENT gate but they want an exact match made

the minimum would have to be around 50mm higher than the top rail to be functional ....this off course will look a bit odd but not as bad as full height to match the other post

the pillar cap should be central overlapping the sides off the pillar
that pillar looks reduced and reformed ?? can it be raised ??
its a compromise what ever you do you need the pillar to match the other side to be balanced or just live with the bodge required

Unfortunately I don't think you have much choice. It is actually pretty common for the post to be higher than the wall. Just check the walls are strong enough to support the wall plates.

Use this image if you need to explain it to the customer.

Current post is missing so nothing to match?

Install gate first, temp fix the new higher post with short screws/bungee/gaffa tape.
Have a spare shorter timber to hand and show them how each option looks.
