Hi,

I’m ready to put a new roof on my garage that I want to turn into a more habitable garden room.

Any structural guys on here that would know what size timbers will I need to use please?

The largest span is 4.6m.

It’ll be a could roof with 100mm (if that’s enough?) celotex in between rafters, 18mm OSB and EDPM.

See rough sketch for measurements.

Thanks.

8x2 , may less with a purlin, quite a few things not specified.

No not putting skylights in.

What other info do you need specifying?

I’m happy to put a purlin through the centre if required.

I’m not fussed about daylight.

Do you have any advise regarding the questions I asked at all?

According to Mr G

For a flat roof with a 4.6-meter span, you would typically need joists that are 75mm thick by 220mm deep, placed at 400mm centers. This is based on information from the CNC Building Control website, which provides guidance on selecting appropriate timber sizes for roof joists. The specific dimensions and spacing might need to be adjusted based on the specific loads and building regulations in your area, but these are common starting points for flat roof construction

For a flat roof with a purling and 2.3-meter span, you would likely need joists sized around 47mm x 145mm, spaced 600mm apart. This size and spacing are suitable for spans of up to 2.5 meters. Remember to consult with a structural engineer or building professional for specific requirements and local regulations, says Building Regs 4 Plans.

I'd have thought the amount of daylight would be an important consideration for someone planning to build a 'garden room'. You do have windows, i presume, and wonder if the addition of a skylight would improve the light quality in the space.

It’s more of a room in the garden than wanting a garden in the room.

Your garage is in the garden?

I used to have a garage.

If I'd moved fences about I could have ended up with it in the garden.

Whether it could still be called a "garage" if there was no longer vehicle access to it is another matter.
