The constant weight of a gate on its hinges tends to cause the hinge-side post to lean in. A rigidly fixed lintel across the tops of the gateposts is very good for preventing that, especially on double gates. This also helps hold them firm when the gate is slammed or rattles in the wind
When it is not possible, the post can be secured by fixing a diagonal from the top of the gatespost to the bottom of another fixing, such as the next fencepost along.
If you think you will need to carry tall objects through the gate, you can fix the lintel with threaded studding, and fix the lintel with a washer and nut that you can unscrew to remove it. Greased stainless steel will not rust into place.
