Hi all,

I have those Hive thermostats on the rads (apart from the front room and 2 bathrooms) I work from home and was wondering if it’s cheaper to heat the one room with a 1kw fan heater or via the CH

Gas cost 5.87p per KWH

11 rads in total, when isolating 1 rad 4 will be on

Electricity cost

Peak 25.96p per KWH
Off peak 7.90 per KWH

Room size (office) 4x3 mtrs, 2mtrs high, appall approx

I know there are loads of variables but just want a rough idea please? I know how to work the leki out but not the gas.

Thanks

When I last done this exercise ( about 2 years ago, so admittedly different prices) the end result was I bought a thermostatically controlled leccy powered Oil filled radiator.
Very efficient, and without the noise of a fan.

Impossible to compare your gas heating cost, it is what it is, but at the night rate, without a doubt, use your off peak leccy for heating, if you are about at those times.

Our cheapest option is gas for heat, because we take the CH stat with us, into the living room, and light the radiant gas fire. It runs at just over 1Kw, much if the time, so sub 6p per hour. An 100w heated blanket, heats the bed for a couple of p, each night.

I would set the central heating thermostat low and use the electric heater to boost the room you are using - this is what my MIL does. It saves her heating the whole house excessively when she just needs a bit of heat in her lounge

My made up and possibly impossible to follow maths says use Gas in the day

If Gas cost 5.87p per KWH
Electricity costs 25.96p per KWH
Then electric is 4x more expensive than gas.
As 1 rad 4 of 11 radiators will be on then you will be heating 3 radiators.
Then electric cost is a bit cheaper than gas cost.
But some of the electric generated heat will leak out of the heated room.
So about parity on cost.
Using gas will be heating three radiators, which is 2 extra radiators.
These will warm the house making it more pleasant and cheaper to warm in evening.

So in your case gas is better (in daytime).
