My Mum bought a Gas Hob. She paid a plumber £70 to remove the existing broken hob and connect a new gas hob. The new hob is faulty, the supplier may have to supply a replacement, but my Mum would have to pay the Gas Fitter another £70 to have it changed over.

Mum is peeved, I see her point, what is the law around supplying faulty products and incurring costs as a result?

Please.

Gas fitter has not responsibility, unless he supplied it. Supplier's liability will be limited to supplying a replacement item.

Is it a plug in gas hob? If so, you might be able to unplug it, and plug the replacement in.

Was it faulty upon installation, or break soon after? As Harry states, it’s not the installers fault if the hob breaks afterwards, however some may see the warranty held with the installer if they provided it. They would need to seek reimbursement of costs from the manufacturer, or if the manufacturer can supply and fit the new one?

Nah, it's piped direct through the compression fitting on the hob. It's not a bayonet.

Thank you, I'll let her know.

I just wondered what the consumer law was/is, I know its not the responsibility of the installer. I actually supplied the hob through my Howdens account.

The gas fitter said one of the burners would ignite and go out, but eventually it started to work, it has since stopped working.

Told Mum to register warranty and call an engineer. Seems a replacement is the option if it can't be fixed.

Then it’s down to Howdens imo, and they should pay for any changeover costs. Sounds like a failed thermocouple, but could be wrong.
