Gas Hob, no oven saftey question

Hi all

We don't use our main oven, only the gas hobs, so we are thinking of ditching the cooker, and placing an hob on top of one of the worksurfaces. It will be near a gas point.
Do i just cut an hole in the top of the worksurface and fit the new hob?
should there be clearances etc?
