I have a mechanical digital gas meter, does the read out show kwhours of gas used.

For example if the read out increases by one digit does this mean one kwhour has been used.

Reading is capacity of gas used. Either cubic feet (older meters) or cubic metres. Should say either ft3 or m3 on the dial. Someone more mathematically minded may be able to tell you how to convert the readings!

The FAQ gives a method of measuring the rate of use of gas in KW. If you just want to know how much you have used between two readings:

If your meter measures in cu ft, multiply the total used by 0.317 to give KW hours.
If your meter measures in 100s of cu ft, multiply the total used by 31.7 to give KW hours
If your meter measures in cu metres, multiply the total used by 11.2 to give KW hours

As mentioned in the FAQ, the figures are approximate because they do depend on the calorific value of the gas, which varies.
