The large thing is a water box, heated by the coal fire, used to supply hot water via gravity circulation to a hot water storage tank. Good ones were made out of really thick copper, so will be worth a few bob at your local scrappy. The pipework disappearing downwards is a drain line - somewhere, probably on the house exterior wall there'll be a small drain valve.
 
Jack Rae thanks very much bud am wanting to rip it out but was unsure if it’s gas it was the smaller pipe running into the ground a vast most concerned about cheers bud
