How do you decide what strength a gas strut is needed?
I have a box with a lid, I would like it to hold it open
the lid is “bigger” than the base.

I want to hold the lid in an “up” position.
do I weigh the lid and a monitor that would be fixed to the lid and go from there?

cheers

On production items the gas strut manufacturers can supply variable struts which you can play about with until you get the right spring strength and damping action. They also offer assistance in selecting an appropriate off the shelf product - manufacturers tend to know their product as opposed to many retailers who haven't a clue and don't give a hoot. One knowledgeable manufacturing firm in the UK who I can recommend is Dictator. They have made specials for me a number of times in the past

I want one for the bonnet of a car (it was supplied with the old-fashioned bent wire rod)

I suppose there must be some way of ordering by weight and length.
