One for you gas guys but I need to know the answer before instructing client on how to go about flat conversion. Can you run a gas supply up the external wall (currently enters in cellar and would like to split the supply there and run a supply up stairs) sleeved in grp etc? This would appear to be the easiest option

There are estates full of copper pipes rising from ground level meters rahn where I am.

The coppernickers are not a stupid lot   . Best story I heard was @ a derilict asylum, usual victorian pile with MILES of corridors...and basement/services corridors to match... they crept in @ night and cut out the lot, wastes, screwed copper feeds, and all the 440v. electric cable..with petrol disc cutters...no one heard a thing

Not plumbing but it made me smile: Couple had their posh house refurbished, gardens landscaped, new lawn laid. Arranged a garden party for all the contractors they'd used - nice.

On the day of the party they woke to find someone had rolled up the lawn and stolen it.

We have loads of top floor flats in Scarborough (man I hate lugging all the parafenalia up and down those stairs and through all those fire doors). Anyhow due to distances if it's a combi it's 28mm, and preferably up the outside, though the one I'm doing tomorrow landlord insists I run it inside. Wouldn't have given galve a second thought, always run it in copper. The outside of Scarborough's properties is littered with copper.

check it is not listed building planners not happy wiv pipe outside of regency buildings round here

Futher investigation located a redundant 22mm water riser so intend to use that. Fell out with my last gas guy using a new one on this couple of points
if incoming main approx 75mbar split supply before regulator and use riser - How does client go about creating a seperate account for the new meter?
believe the riser doesnt pass through cavity(s) so no need for sleeving going up 1 floor only so where can does the expansion joint need to be located?
Fire stopping of this old water riser?
Can we do this or will it have to go up a shaft?
Ignorance in this case is not bliss!!!

like paul said depends on size of boiler any other gas appliances to be used and length of p[ipe run to obtain 20mb working pressure at appliance/s 22mm may not be large enough. as for splitting before do not think will work prob. not large enough volume to cope

The 75mbar bit, up to the meter, is Transco's pigeon, you can't do ANYTHING with that.

Isolation needs to be considered as well, does the tenant in top flat have access to the gas meter.

If they have their own seperate meter and have access isolation isn't essential, but I agree it is best practice and do put it just inside the flat.
If the suggestion of using an old pipe which might not have been soldered with flux suitable for gas, or worse may have compression fittings beyond reach or visual inspection, doesn't raise alarm bells the idea of using same pipe for 75mb illegally should.

That gas supplier would certainly insist on running the pipe in the safest way up the outside.

*******s to listed buildings, gas safety first.
