Is there any difference in the aplication of these. Like most i've had problems with seized gate valves while ball valves or even isolator valves seem to be better. Thanks.

gate valve versus ball valve

Forget the gate valves as they don't like mains pressure and will allow some water to pass which rather defeats the object. 
Gate valves were used before ball valves were invented.
Thanks to you all; I'm fully clued up now.
Gate valves are the work of the devil!
