Girl not allowed to wear Union Jack dress

It's in the article in #24. It starts off nicely. But rather weird language for a 12 year old. Before ending with a couple of dog whistles.
“Courtney's speech for Culture Day
Today I want to talk about my culture - British culture - and why it's important to me.

In Britain, we have lots of traditions including drinking tea, our love for talking about the weather and we have the royal family.

We have amazing history, like kings and queens, castles, and writers like Shakespeare.

It's also modern, diverse and always changing - with music fashion and food from all around the world blending into daily life. And let's not forget fish and chips!

Its also the way we speak, our humour, our values of fairness and politeness, and the mix of old traditions and new ideas.

But sometimes at school, we only hear about other cultures - which is great because learning about different countries is interesting and important. But it can feel like being British doesn't count as a culture, just because it's the majority.

I think culture should be for everyone - not just for people from other countries or backgrounds. Being British is still a culture, and it matters too.. It's part of who I am.

So let's celebrate all cultures - whether they come from far away or right here at home.”

Which bits don’t you like? Seems ok to me.

From the article others were also sent home wearing a welsh flag and one dressed in attire representing his families background of farming.

So you can see the flaw in the plan?

A day celebrating different cultures where students dress in traditional dress and nobody thought to ask, what will the English wear?
Agreed but that was the point i suspect. That said, a union jack is a flag not a dress.

Being of sound mind I would question if a Union Jack dress was a traditional British dress and would have had my kid speak with their tutor beforehand but maybe that's just me? But I guess that didn't happen, either because the parents are not of sound mind or were setting their kid for a fall. It was so embarrassing for her having to sit in reception all morning but having her photo branded about the world in the shabby press is OK.

I wonder if the same would have happened if she dressed in the colours of the Palestine ?
The colours or the flag?

What would be interesting if a Palestinian turned up to such a day wearing part of the national dress - a keffiyeh...

Because the press (particularly the RW bunch) over the years have turned it into a symbol of terrorism.

I wonder whether they filled the form in as required.

It’s just an opinion.

I do feel being white and British doesn’t actually get you the “white privilege” we hear so much about.

In fact the opposite.
