In the bathroom and shower room at my parents house we have glass lampshades with simple patterns embossed in the glass, these seem to work ok and unlike the more recent fittings i've seen are open at the bottom giving some ventilation. Furhermore because they fit standard batttern holders decent quality holders can be used.
