Hi
I have a micron 50ff boiler with an intermittent fault, when heating hot water to my Systemate2000 it runs fine when demand is requested.

When heating demand kicks in, it runs fine for about 4 mins, then trips out, ie something is telling it to stop, however since the house is still cold it immediately tries to restart, then it goes into a cycle start /stop/reset start/ stop reset start over and over again for about 1-2mins 30 times a minute reckon, then after 2 mins or so it starts up again for 3 or 4 mins and off it goes again stop reset start / stop reset start, it can do this for hours on end. This also causes the pumps in the systemate to start stop also which concerns me as i think it will knacker them then i am in a whole world of pain.

But then all of a sudden it works perfectly for a day or two with no issues.

Any one got any idea of the fault, i have check the cause table on the gloworm manual but i am not getting a match. I have a slow reset light as it resets and tries to start, then resets again over and over.

One useful bit of info maybe, when it is in this sequence of start stop, and i turn the the thermostat down ie remove the central heating demand, it still stays in the start stop loop, it seem to ignore the fact i have stopped requesting heat via the thermostat.

Any help would be appreciated. I have a service booked for Friday in two days time (02nd December 2016) i just want an idea of the issue so i know what the service engineer needs to do and an idea of cost.

I can get a one off fix from glowworm for £199. so i need to work out local repair man or 199 from glowworm which is cheaper?

Regards Stu

If your boiler is running ok for hot water then chances are its a control fault, the boiler does not know if your requesting hot water or heating.

As Picasso says it sounds like your boiler is fine and that the problem is within the systemate, possibly a stcking CH pump or a faulty Appliance control board, change your thread title to systemate 2000 and you will get someone who works on these all the time to advise you better, Gledhill will also do a fixed price repair on these as parts can be expensive

if it is going to be expensive as the system is 13 -14 years old now (2003 install) i am leaning towards ripping the whole lot out and replacing the boiler and systemate 2000 and a complete new install by BG or someone. If it is going to be expensive, as i will probably have to replace the whole thing in 2 or 3 years anyway. But i will get an idea of cost of repair first.

I also cannot guarantee that the hot water demand runs fine, it just seemed to run continually for hot water demand demand when i turned down the thermostat. but that could be just luck

I think Gledhill do a fixed price repair for about £200 includes all parts, only you can decide if that is worth it to get you going, these get a really bad name but I personally quite like them they are just a different way of doing things, you would be ill advised to get someone in who doesnt know these I would go with Gledhill if I was you

but 342 is getting a bit high for me.
once someone not familiar with this system start changing parts then you'll realise that price will be fair , if you don't know anyone familiar with this system ( not many ) then i would advise getting gledhill out then you know its done properly with parts sorted quickly , that price is probably labour and parts included .

I am not daft enough to let that happen, I am attempting to contact a recommended engineer in Nottingham but so far I have no success in getting contact. What I need to figure out is what is the cheapest solution for now and the next 5 years. I have one local engineer arriving to do a service this friday(that might get change to a quote job), i have also got BG coming to give me a quote for a entire strip and replace on Friday also (benchmark cost), and i am attempting to get into contact with a Gledhills engineer from nottingham to get me a repair estimate, and i am also going to get a some local installers to give me a quote for strip and install of a new system vs the BG cost.

What appears to me is i have a system no knows anything about and is very complicated. it is 13/14 seasons old and will need lots of repairing over the next few years at a large cost as the skills are in short supply, parts costly etc. So I might as well admit that, bite the bullet and see about replacing it altogether. but on the off chance the repair is simple quick and cost effective i might a well see what a knowledge engineer comes up with. at 342 i would much rather strip out the system and and pay off 10% of the cost of a fresh install.

make sure you tell the service guy the problem before he turns up or you might waste more money . a service is not a repair .

I would be checking the relays on the systemate pcb they control the pumps and boiler.
PCBs are approximately 260.00 + labour + vat

thanks for your advice, i will pass that onto the engineers that i get to look at it, again if that proves to be the diagnoses i think i will rip it out.

Why get rid of the boiler if its running ok ? get a quote for an unvented cylinder and then when your boiler breaks down change that.

picasso
that is an option, need to be sure though that the boiler is up to the job, I think the boilers fitted with the thermal stores then to have a lower kw output than would be required by a unvented cylinder, but i will be a gas heating installer decide on that.
the thermal stores require a little bit of heat to top the the store they do not required to supply a massive amount of hot water in a short space of time.
