Hi all

Should you always undercoat when glossing, is it better to use oil rather than water based? What are you thoughts on one coat gloss, just wondered as time is an issue. Many thx

I have never used undercoat, I only prime
Not a painter though, just a diyer of many years

Always use an undercoat..im not being funny, but thats why they make it.

And undercoat does many things, it helps fill tiny surface imperfections, it 'keys' itself to the existing coating, provides a nice base for the gloss and obivously, covers up the colour underneath.

Its ok to gloss over gloss if its pretty new, as in a few weeks (its often specifified by many architects etc) it helps give a brighter smoother finish.

You can use water based undercoat under oil based gloss and vice versa.

Personally I dont like the one coat glosses but they should be ok providing you give the existing coat a really good rub down to provide a key...dont side of that being that small scratches will show through the finish.

Zampa, ta for that I thought it was just to mask the original paint colour.
