is the pipework on my boiler correct? when i isolate the cold water inlet with the cock on the boiler inlet, i should not get anything from the DHW circuit? I have drained residual water in the lines but water will still come out (albeit) at a trickle for over 48hrs

Sounds like the valve is passing. If you turn the main stop tap off, the flow should stop.

Either replace the valve, or fit a lever valve on the cold pipe before the boiler.

Your service valve to the boiler is probably letting by.
