Hi - have just bought a house with rather old looking boiler, timer and thermostat. House was owned by an elderly person and boiler looks at least 30 years old, but has a sticker saying it has been maintained. Everything was turned off, and have followed instructions on boiler to light the pilot light - but that is as far as it goes - doesn't fire up - what should I check first? Is there something that may have been turned off that I need to try? So cold and so much to do in the house.

Thanks for the prompt replies - found out it was the thermostat on the wall that had to be turned off before lighting the pilot - turned it off with everything else and pilot relit and boiler fired up. We now have heat - flames a bit yellow - is this OK?

NO turn it off and get an RGI to look at it ASAP
