Google nexus 5 the iPhone killer

I don't think she's realised how good he nexus 5 is, you make sure you let her know every chance you get, it won't be long before the 4S is on ebay lol!

You must be joking. We've just shelled out for my new phone. She won't be getting a new one for at least another year!

In fact it will do for her anniversary present in May 2015. I usually get her a new ironing board cover, but I'll push the boat out for once.

I have to say that I am very impressed indeed with the delivery of this item. I ordered it on Friday and it arrived today.

We were out, of course (isn't that always the case), but a card was on the mat saying that it had been left at the local post office - about 10 minutes' walk away. As we got home at 4.50pm, we drove there without delay and just arrived before they closed. I had read that it would cost £1 for this pick-up service, but the woman at the post office didn't want it.

It must be Christmas!

Great stuff!

How do you like the un-skinned KitKat?

They're very good at Rectory Gardens WRT charges.

You've lost me now! Remember I'm a raw beginner.

Unskinned Kit Kat? That a chocolate bar with the wrapper removed?

Or does it mean that there's no manufacturer's added bits and pieces?

It did come with something like 90-odd apps, although I'm not sure where they all are. There are twenty-odd on the home screens. I thought there wouldn't be any apps included except for things like the camera. Nevertheless, I downloaded a couple of (free!) apps: Avast anti-virus and theft programme, and a QR/barcode reader.

Anyway, it's a fascinating thing. I'm just beginning to learn what it can and can't do.

Are you new to android?

JFYI KitKat is the latest version of android, i think secure means unbranded when he says unskinned (i think), meaning no networks silly extras the insist on loading onto the back of the OS.

Keep us informed how you get on with the nexus 5, it'll probably be my next phone too

Yes, new to Android and new to smart phones full stop.

Yes, I had an inkling it might be something like that.

As for Facebook, however...

Mrs R persuaded me to open an account. Again, I'm completely unfamiliar with it. Not impressed, though; basically, it won't let me enter the details I want. For example, Bradford is in the West Riding of Yorkshire, not West Yorkshire, and books by M R James can only be listed as 'various', apparently. They need to realise that my details are mine, not theirs! :x

I,ve just been persuaded to join bookface myself, its kind of alright for a laugh but i've always been of the mindset if i need to get in touch with someone i'll just text or email them without the whole world knowing :D

What does Mrs JBR think...green with envy, impressed?

I've cancelled my Facebook account. I got fed up with it telling me what I could and could not write in my profile. And it's America-centric!

No, Mrs R isn't really like that. It's swings and roundabouts anyway: in some ways my Nexus is better; in others her iPhone is better. Her camera, for example is better than mine.

One important thing, though, is the cost. Apart from the Nexus costing about half that of the iPhone, her contract is inferior with regard to cost. She pays about £25 a month and uses about 500MB of data, whilst I have paid £10 so far (on PAYG) and can download 500MB for £5.

Yeah, I don't bother with facebook.

Loada tripe!

Android is an OS based on open-source Linux and was developed by Android Inc, backed by money from Google, who later bought the company. "Unskinned" is Android as it is issued by Google, as it appears on their devices, ie the Nexus 5 and 7 and one or two others like the Google Play Edition of the S4.

Other manufacturers put their own "face" or "skin" on the software, which basically means it does the same thing, but looks different. The problem with nearly all "skinned" versions is that they can slow down the operation of the phone and sometimes make the phone not as intuitive to use.

KitKat is indeed the latest version of Android (4.4) and you have that on your Nexus 5. The version most of the newest Android phones are running is Jellybean 4.2.2.

JB 4.3 has been released, but manufacturers are slow to release it for OTA updates.

The brilliant thing about buying a Nexus is that (being a Google device) it will always be first in line for the latest version of Android. Just make sure that you are happy to update before you go ahead (sometimes bugs are reported).

Yes, good advice SS.

I wouldn't buy any new software without giving it time to iron out initial bugs, and you certainly wouldn't catch me queuing up overnight to be first to buy a new phone, as has happened with the iPhone.
