Nobby, Can you explain what you mean by "racist" comment, I point out that maybe some Indian child is working fourteen hours a day making carpets or Nike trainers for a pittance and somebody over here is creaming it in off there backs, and they wont call that ripping off, they will call it business, why do you think all the banks are having their call centers abroad, duh, tell me what part of my comment was "racist"

I apologise, I misunderstood your post

Where as you seemed to just want to find things to whinge about.
You really have some difficulty with simple questions don't you? What is you do you for a living that you are so ashamed of?

Watchdog may not have asked you but they will have seen many more guys who don't rip people off and do a good honest job, just like you but that doesn't make good TV. But what there programme does show is that there are rip off plumbers. But for some reason some of you appear to feel the need to defend them and at least one of you feels my comments are alienating.

Thats because I don't see the relevance of this question

I came on here to have a rant about a guy who advertisers the fact that he is a Central Heating Specialist, Repairs & Service etc etc and appeared to not know what he was doing. He is a CORGI registered engineer although I now know that this doesn’t prove he knows how to diagnose and repair boiler faults but just shows that he was able to demonstrate at the time of his exam that he is able to work safely with gas and test for leaks (something he only done with prompting when he repaired my boiler).

I don't think I ever suggested that he ripped me off because clearly he didn't however, if he didn't have a customer "standing over him" who has some knowledge of heating and the workings of a boiler then maybe he would have ripped me off.
Trust me, if I was allowed to change the gas valve myself I would have done so but I choose not to be a heating engineer therefore I have no need to be CORGI (or is it GORGI? ) registered.
My knowledge of the building trade in general is fair and my need to use qualified/ experienced/ competent tradesmen is not usually needed however some people aren’t has fortunate as I and are in the hands of these tradesmen who may or may not rip them off. It is commendable that some of you try to defend your trade but if you know what you are doing and don't rip people off you shouldn’t feel the need to defend it but acknowledge the fact that there are rouges amongst your trade, just like many other trades. I think I would be right in saying that the rogues amongst your trade wouldn't even know this forum existed let alone post advice in it. (but if they do know about it they probably use it to pick your brains) I apologise to those of you who feel offended by my comments.

The answer to the question of what I do for a living still remains a mystery!

Fair enough :!:

Never put anything down to malice that which can be put down to stupidity:cool:

woo CHAPS Enough

lets cool down a tad shall we

Nobby CORGI (NOT GORGI but I fear we may be splitting hairs) Ensures that the operative that works on your boiler is fully cognisant with the SAFETY aspect of boilers, cookers whatever but does not ensure that they can fault find every boiler on the market

AND THATS IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes there are some installers out there who don't know the arse from their elbow but that happens in every field of work, I remember we had a huge drainage job at an old firm i used to work at (the bill at the end was some thing like 30k nightmare scary job) and the insurance company insisted on sending a loss adjuster out, they sent a FINE ARTS assessor who did not have a clue but spent two hours telling my gaffer the rights and wrongs of drain laying (my gaffer was a Civil Engineer if more acreditations than that)

So these things happen

As an installer you come across as the worlds worst client, one that has about tuppence of knowledge but thinks he can tell a person his job

This is fair enough, as has been said you are paying the bill, but I still think the engineer you had was a good lad as he said if he was wrong he would get it right at no further cost to you, You really cannot say fairer than that.

As I have said MOST central heating guy soak up info about their chosen trade, as the posts within this forum show, so you had a bit of bad luck thats all

As for everyone else LEAVE IT, WE HAVE ALL HAD A DRINK, ITS NOT WORTH IT (and other such stuff we used to say on a friday night outside a kebab shop when we were 18!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Seriously i really like the friendly (PVM excepted ;) ) atmosphere here and it sad to see a reasonable discussion fall into a petty slanging match

This is a diy advice forum not a rant soapbox.

And another thing I have been either badly ripped off or have experienced a fine upstanding business sense by the following

1, Estate agent, when I brought my house my neighbour told me he heard the estate agent saying to the owner, they are really keen refuse their next offer they'll up the next

2, Mechanics (this all ways happens ain't got a clue about motors)

3, Financial advisers (my first mortgage was an endowment and he earned a fortune of my back)

4, MERCHANTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!, found out recently that i was not receiving as good a discount as nearly every one else, and the owner was a mate

and 5, BANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! enough said.

It happens to everyone but it seems that all the bile and vitriol is turned against the plumbers as if they are the only ones doing it.

When does a good profit margin become a rip off?

When BT return profits of 2000 PER MINUTE

When wolesly centres (plumb centre etc) return pre tax profits of 250,000,000

When TESCO's report that they are on target to earn ONE BILLION profit this year

Why cant I earn a handsome profit for my work? lord knows I work for it

(puff puf  ) Rant over
