Ok the light worked fine then i put it all in the housing with a bit of a shove and when i screwed it in place it now does not work.

I think its the wires they are so old they seem brital.

What can i put the chock block in to push it above into the ceiling, can i just wrap it in insulation tape.
 
they make a little translucent box to suit. Or maybe you could put the connector inside the lamp enclosure?

It ought really be accessible for inspection and maintenance, since screwed terminals can come loose. This makes them overheat and burn away (which is why they should be in an enclosure)

You might also consider a ceiling rose or a junction box.
 
it only just fitted into the mount , i recon thats why it has stopped working
