After 9 months i finally got the keys to my house and so went in today to get lots of pics and detailed measurements.
In the corner of the room there is a cube about 12" along all sides with what looks like a flu coming out of the bottom. It feels like brick but I'm not sure what it is. The only guess i can make is that when the house was built in the 50s it had a coal boiler in the corner like my grandmothers house and this is a remnant. Until i cant lift the floor upstairs i cant see what it look like form above but does anyone have any ideas?

Also coming out of the wall directly beneath it is a pipe going to the boiler. Does that look like a gas pipe to you? The gas enters the building under the stairs but i couldn't seem to see it going back down again which suggests to me that it goes up into the floor space and then drops down again.
Apologies if these are really dumb questions. its my first house and I'm just trying to figure out what i have let myself in for!
