After 9 months i finally got the keys to my house and so went in today to get lots of pics and detailed measurements.

In the corner of the room there is a cube about 12" along all sides with what looks like a flu coming out of the bottom. It feels like brick but I'm not sure what it is. The only guess i can make is that when the house was built in the 50s it had a coal boiler in the corner like my grandmothers house and this is a remnant. Until i cant lift the floor upstairs i cant see what it look like form above but does anyone have any ideas?

Also coming out of the wall directly beneath it is a pipe going to the boiler. Does that look like a gas pipe to you? The gas enters the building under the stairs but i couldn't seem to see it going back down again which suggests to me that it goes up into the floor space and then drops down again.

Apologies if these are really dumb questions. its my first house and I'm just trying to figure out what i have let myself in for!

apologies, some forums like flickr code others dont. I always forget to preview first >< lol. All fixed now. Thanks :)

you guessed right on both counts  The only problems you let yourself in for will be with the god-like RGI`s on this forum   Me , I`m just a know-nothing plumber

I doubt that'll be a gas pipe. Ive never seen a drain off in a gas supply, so id rather hope the pipe contains water......

This is good to hear! the water main comes up out of the ground on the other side of the room by the sink so which of the other two pipes in that image are the gas? the 15mm one going into the bottom or the 22mm one going into the top? above the boiler ish is the hot water tank.
