Hi folks,

My plumber has just fitted my granite composite drink in my new kitchen. It has had no seal at (not even any tape). My plumber had advised it will be fine, but having suffered from swollen Worktops due to water ingress in the past I am nervous. Also, despite being reliable in the past, his general level of work has been poor mostly due to him not leaving enough time and rushing everything. I am tempted to refit myself using some kind of seal - can anyone advise if this is necessary? If so what would be best way?

Thanks in advance

If the sink does not make a watertight seal against the worktop then water will always find its way below it and then onto the cut section of the worktop causing it to swell.
  • The cut should always be waterproofed with a suitable treatment depending on material - Waterproof PVA, varnish, wood oils etc
  • The sink should be sealed to the worktop using either propriety seals - rubber-mastic-foam or sanitary anti mould silicone.

Very helpful thanks so much. Am now sealing cut wood with PVA and also have a foam sealing gasket. Thanks again.

standard PVA won't seal against water ingress. Use a solvent based varnish.

The sink will be sealed with a foam gasket the PVA is just insurance. Just surprised my plumber left it with neither!
