Is it to late to put grass seed down? What's the best way to get it to take quickly?

No, early Autumn is fine. Cover the area with fleece - keeps birds from eating the seed and holds a bit of warmth and humidity which helps germination. Water gently if there's no rain.
Spread the seed before rain, it'll sprout. I didn't have problems with birds eating seed. Are you putting it on bare soil?
Yea i was gonna cover with thin layer of compost?
