I am using shingle on an area of my garden. One boundary is my neighbours fence and I want to keep the shingle away from his fence. I thought gravel boards would do the trick but I cannot fix them to his fence. How can I fix the gravel boards so they will not move? Are there metal spikes available I could screw to the boards and drive down into the ground? Can anybody help?

Consider treated timber stakes.
Make a small hole with a steel bar to pilot the stake, then hammer the stake in until you get a firm upright stake. Then screw the board to the stake and cut the stake flush with the top of the board.

Quick question...
Why can't you affix the boards to the fence? I know legally you shouldn't if it is your neighbours fence, but could you not discuss it with your neighbour and reach agreement on it?
Or is there another reason such as post type or spacing?

put the boards against the fence posts, heap the shingle against them, it will hold it in place. You can scoop out a small trough in the soil with a garden trowel if you want, for the board to sit in, and beat the soil down hard afterwards. Wooden gravel boards will quickly tot, so consider concrete ones.
