Gravity system - water from vent pipe into F&E tank!

Hi everyone!
Just an update on this for anyone who is interested!
I had someone come round today to look at the system and he said:
"You need to turn the pump down!"
When I told him I already had, he was a bit perturbed!
Anyway he had a look and in the end turned down the flow restrictor valve that goes into the hot water tank (to heat the coil).
This helped the problem massively but didn't solve it completely. Another tweak down and - problem solved.
The system has been running fine all day with hot rads and water, and not pumping over!
Hope that has resolved it now. But thanks for all your posts and help!
Until next time!

shutting down the cylinder is not a proper fix The positon of the cold feed and open vent in relation to the pump is the cause ,you may now find that your cylinder is slow to heat up.

I asked if this fix would affect the effectiveness of heating the water. But was told that it definitely wouldn't!
It clearly is some bigger picture because it has been operating absolutely fine for years, but then this has happened needing the pump to be turned down and the tank flow restricted.
Seriously thinking of taking the government up on their offer of £400 and getting a new system!!
Such would be the upheaval of getting to the pipework between cold feed and pump (under kitchen floor into bathroom!) that if it is a bigger problem then it might be throwing money at an old system.
if it can sort it for a while then a boiler change in the spring would be better than now!

if it happens again a temporary fix is to fix a plastic bag over the open vent with an elastic band,it would blow off if there was a build up of pressure but should stop pumping over. :

Pumping can also caused by fitting the pump the wrong side of the vent, it should be on the return but after the vent so the vent pipe is on the negative side
