Hi all,

We have a 99V Polo 1.4 CL and have recently noticed a grinding noise coming from the gearbox (or clutch?) when depressing the clutch.

initially I thought it might be the thrust bearing but it only does it when the car is moving. I had a thrust bearing go before on a previous car and the noise occurred when standing still as well as moving. The noise is similar though.

The gear change is smooth and the clutch operates as normal. The car has only done 32,000 miles.

Any ideas on what it might be? the noise is getting louder as time goes by!

Cheers

thrust bearing would be my first guess too

Not sure on that model if you can change them from the end of the gearbox rather than taking the box out as some of the earlier VW's had pull clutches and you could pop the bearing out off the end.

cheers neo, i thought a faulty thrust bearing would make a noise when the car is standstill as well though?

at the moment it's only making a noise when making gearchanges (when clutch is fully depressed) or if I coast on the clutch - i don't do that though!

cheers

Matt
