I bough a pair of Grohe Arabesk basin taps from Screwfix, I couldn't get the standard tap connector to screw on the tail.

They came with a nut to go on the tail with a small hole in it and a red fibre washer, what are these for?

I've changed taps a few times and never had this before.

Increasingly taps are using 'non standard' connections. You will proberbly have to alter the pipework.
