The grate in my kitchen gully is metal, round and seems to be 7" diameter (holding tape measure above it without removal). Is that normal? All the replacement ones I have seen say 6". I want to get one that a hole can be cut in to allow my waste disposal unit to discharge below it.

You could really get any plastic grid and cut it to suite.

Does anyone know if its still permissable to discharge OVER an open gully any more or does it HAVE to be taken down through the grill as the OP is doing?

Or worse still taken to a BIG ?

It's the size that matters (or so my wife says ;) )
