Hi
The gutter at the front of my house seems to have come apart - well a gap is visible at a supporting bracket and investigation reveals that there is no way of pulling the gutter back into the joint. Whilst I know the windows need a wash, this is a bit extreme with the wonderful Cumbrian rain!

From a quick glance at previous questions on this I can see this is probably due to thermal contraction / expansion over time. My question is this - where do I start if I am going to repair it myself or what do I need to know to ensure if I get someone in to do this that the repair is sound and won't recur?

Thanks in advance!

Are you sure that the gutter just hasn't been cut short?

There was no gap originally and I can see a line of sealant around the gutter about an inch or more so along from the support bracket. So I believe it has shrunk!!! I have been up and had a look, tried to pull it to see if it will move back towards the support, but it is rock solid.

You need to pull all the gutter clips down to unclip the gutter, and then rotate the gutter so that it is loose. You can then slide it sideways.

There are marks on the inside of joints and bends showing where the gutter should be inserted to. If after resetting the whole run a piece is too short, then either get a new longer section, or use an extra smaller section and joint.

It's amazing how black gutter does shrink though, like loads. You'd just think it would just expand in the heat and contract down to it's original size, not get smaller.
