Why don't the opposing team just ignore it and carry on warming up or something? Or is it done instead of the national anthems?

Why would anyone want to ignore it, its incredibly moving, haka constitute an integral part of formal or official welcome ceremonies for distinguished visitors or foreign dignitaries, serving to impart a sense of the importance of the occasion. Its great, makes me weep!

They do it because it gets the blood pumping and the adrenalin flowing. I would imagine that facing it has a similar effect.

Have a peek on Youtube for New Zealand vs Tonga.

The All Blacks are doing the Haka when the Tongans do their Sepi Tao (sp)
