Halogen light

Hello all,

I have a twin 500w halogen worklight which is rated 110v. Can I use it safely on a 230/240v supply.

Would I need to change the lamps or will it need rewiring as well.

Thank you.

Forester

The only difference will be the voltage rating of the lamps inside and the plug. The cable will be fine as it will be at least to BS6500.

Just checked my cheapo oriental 110 V site lamp; it has an on/off switch rated 150V. No idea what the cable insulation rating is.

Thanks for your help guys...took the bull by the horns this morning...replaced the bulbs...replaced the plug...and went for it.

All seems to tbe fine...no rcd blow-outs...no fuses blown...lights worked fine.

Will be going for a proper trial tonight...lights will be on for about 3 hours.

Cheers...

Changing a lamp and a plug pointless?
You seem to have a problem with understanding simple words.

No - just not keen on pointless risks.
"pointless Risks", please note, not pointless tasks. Such as changing lamps and plug.

The risk here is assuming that the light is safe to use at over twice it's rated voltage, and that no harm will come to anybody if it is so used.

As the consequences of it not being safe could be dire, and the price of a light which is designed to work at 230V is £20-40, IMO taking the risk is pointless.

I'd have to question your skills if any of that appears risky to you. Good editing by the way.

Gentlemen, if it helps, I have found a label on the mains lead giving information. It has a number HO5RN.F written on it...which I have checked on the internet.

It would appear that this cable is suitable for 300/500 volts, therefore should be quite safe at 230v

There are no switches on the lamp and I have changed the bulbs (and the plug)...as this is a brand-new and unused item would you agree that there seems to be very little risk or danger involved in using it.
