I have several halogen spotlights (the 240V 50W 2 pin type) that keep going off and then coming on again after a while. I have tried replacing the bulbs but this keeps happening. I suspect this has something to do with contact being lost in the fitting when they heat up and being made again when they start cooling down. However the fitting doesn't seem to come apart - can anyone help?

Your assumption is likely to be correct regarding the loss of contact due to heat, the only possible solution would be to replace the fittings.
