Hand saws - 'binding' - what does it mean?

I keep reading about hand saws with special features that help to prevent 'binding'.

What exactly is binding and what causes it?

Binding is when the blade grips and bends. That is why the teeth are 'set' - splayed out so to speak to cut a slot wider than the saw.
 
this is where good ole candle wax comes into it,or if your a really old duffer like i remember seeing :roll: they used to use tallow.
