Hi all,

Bit of an unusual tiling situation. I am laying floor tiles in front of a fireplace surround (which I am also cladding with tiles) and part of the subfloor is floorboards, and the other is concrete as you can see from the photo. The concrete part is the hearth which I have repaired and levelled, more or less. The wooden frame I have just constructed is what I am boarding out and then tiling.

This is the final look I am going for:

My question is I have 6mm hardiebacker to put down which is obviously needed for the floorboards but I need to have this level. I am guessing I just use the same technique of using tile adhesive underneath the board in the concrete section, and was potentially going to also use masonry screws to secure it at appropriate intervals. Any other ideas or suggestions (or just confirmation that this isn't a terrible idea) welcome. I guess my only other option is to do away with the hardiebacker for the concrete subfloor part but then I'll be building up my adhesive layer much more to try and keep it level which seems a bad idea.

Incidentally I have already got a method sorted for the transition to the wood flooring, which will be the same level.
