How much can you take off a hardwood door before it affects the integrity of the door?

I have a 15 pane glazed hardwood door that I’d like to relocate but the door is 32 inches and where I want to put it is 30 inches. Is an inch either side too much to take off?

Can you give us a pic of the door, Alison?
If I remember correctly, mortise lock depths are either 2/12" or 3" but if it's for internal use, maybe a Bales catch or similar would suffice.
Regards
John :)

Don't think regs allow a 30" external door doo they

The problem isnt the lock depth, the problem is the bit be it either a spade bit or an auger bit, both have long points past the cutting depth.

Equally its hard to work out on non beaded hardwood doors how far the glass is rebated in to the stile, I generally presume 10mm to be safe. I mark the lock/latch depth on a spade bit with masking tape, drill most of the way inside the safe zone, remove the auger bit and cut the tip off with an angle grinder then proceed to drill the rest.

The alternative is a forstner bit, or a router and a jig, but that's not very DIY.

Not main entrance door, but side doors and garage doors are fine. That said if its not being done under BC and the existing frame is for a 30 inch door then.....
