Has my loft floor been reinforced?

Our loft which is a storage room has stairs and a roof light etc. But I am not sure about paying to have it properly converted as it may not be worth it on this property.

I assumed the floor wasn't reinforced either but then I was thinking and I saw this......

You can see my original ceiling joist running left to right but then there is an extra joist running towards the camera. (I assume they gave up on the deeper joists though which explains the cut one)

Has anyone got an idea as to whether this looks like it may be helping? Assuming it is laid across the load bearing walls. It might be that they are not thick enough though.

Any thoughts welcome!!!

Loft ceiling joists should tie in the roof rafters. What you say is the original joist is running the wrong way.

To try & figure out whatever function the other cross timbers perform would require a pic of where they go.

Does the roof slope go beyond and down to some other kind of wall plate and joist arrangement - or does it go down to the eaves/fascia?

In the room below are the walls sloped at the top or plumb all the way?

Forgot to mention but the roof is a hip roof and the picture is showing the hip side. So the original ceiling joists do tie in with the rafters on those 2 sides.

The walls are plumb. The rafters overhang the house to form a 2ft soffit

The extra joists are supporting the raised floor. What is supporting the extra joists? Probably load bearing walls from below? The cut joist is irrelevant.

Thanks ree. That's what I thought. I am interested to see if the extra joists meet the required std for loft floors. I will do some research.

I think the cut joist is from when a previous owner realised that it was too deep for them!
