Hi

I had a phone call from an insurance company last week asking if i would like to take out a insurance cover to cover my electrics for break downs.
And i said No i can do most repairs myself the lady implied that it was not legal to fix any electrics in your home if you where not qualified any more, i kind of told her she was talking through a hole in her head

See http://wiki.diynot.com/electrics:part_p:diy_electrical_work_and_the_law which will tell you what you need to know.

Particularly note the following:

A very important and fundamental point to note is that DIY electrical work has not been outlawed. It has been brought within the remit of the Building Regulations and cannot be carried out as freely as it was before, and in many cases cannot be carried out without involving your local council, but you may still DIY.

In virtually all cases, repair work is not notifiable to the building inspector.

Stricter controls have been brought into force a couple of years ago, but this mainly applies to installation work.

It sounds like an unscrupulous insurance company trying to feed joe public mis-information to try and sell their product.

It is disgusting and does nothing to help this already misunderstood building regulation get properly implemented.

Totally agree RF,

Should have added that repair work generally isn't notifiable - and this is what any insurance would generally cover - definitely an insurance company trying to make money (shock!).

I've seen a few other companies offering this now.

If course, if the Government had done a good job of advertising what Part P really means, these companies wouldn't be able to peddle this rubbish.

Well spotted!

Just makes even more of a mockery of this insurance joke.

Name and shame.

(Also send them a letter)

Outsider, Part P (the regs the insurance co were refering to) do not apply in Scotland
