My 29 year old Ideal Concord has now packed up & needs replacing.

It was in the loft but the boiler thermostat was dropped into the Toilet below and fixed to the wall, so that Boiler Temp. could be adjusted.

Does anyone know whether the same can be done with any of the modern boilers available today.

Thank you Gordon

I doubt if the thermostat in the toilet was just used to control the boiler temperature. It was probably a room thermostat - though you never can tell!

If you are replacing your boiler, you will have to install controls which meet current Building Regulation requirements. This includes:
  • Converting gravity HW systems to fully pumpled
  • Boiler interlock, to shut the boiler down when the Hot Water or Central heating is up to temperature
  • Separate time controls over the CH and HW
  • Separate control over the HW and CH temperature, including TRVs in all rooms without a wall thermostat
You need to get several heating engineers (3 minimum) to advise what is the best thing to do and give you quotations. Don't be surprised if you get three different solutions at widely differing prices. But, when you do, come back and the experts  will advise.

Thank you D Hailsham for reply (I've been away a few days)

Thermostat in Toilet is definitely Boiler Thermostat, I did it myself 29 years ago.
Was able to take Boiler Thermostat box out of Ideal Concorde and fixed near top of wall in Toilet and Thermostat Sensor fed back into Boiler, directly above in the Loft.
I am asking if this could be done with any new Boilers. I suppose with modulating boilers that one is not likely to want to use the Boiler
Thermostat to adjust the Flow water temperature very often, not that I adjust the present boiler very often, but it is useful to be able to do so when required without climbing up into the loft.

You would have to contact the boiler manufacturer as any unauthorized changes would invalidate their guarantee. However, I have never had a situation where I needed to adjust the boiler temperature. The only temperatures which need controlling are the room temperature, controlled by the wall thermostat, and the hot water temperature, controlled by the HW cylinder thermostat. Both of these thermostats are wired so that they turn the boiler off the required room or HW temperature has been reached. Once set, the boiler temperature is not altered.

As you say, modulating boilers will adjust the gas rate to maintain the correct flow and return temperatures.

You can use a boiler with external weather compensation and that will take care of most of your needs.

But someone with a little electronics knowledge can add a potentiometer to the external sensor to give additional control from anywhere inside the property.

However, everyone else manages with a simple room stat to turn the heating on or off when the desired comfort temperature is met. Its difficult to understand why you want anything else.
