Have I been ripped off - how much should this have cost?

I expected the extras to be a few hundred quid.

When I got the bill for the "extras" I was godsmacked- can you let me know if this is reasonable.
Anything less that one million pounds would be a bargain.

Without actually seeing the job it's not to easy to give a costing.
But i'd say for what you wanted as extras it's not too far off the mark.

When you look at the cost of materials you may look at the cheapest where as the electrician (like me) will tend to stick to a brand such as MK or Crabtree & not your cheap run of the mill B&Q clutter, so the cost you get may not be a true reflection.

As has already been said you should have got the costing in writing, why let the bloke plod on in the firstplace

Getting money out of the builder good luck on that one, he's done as asked & built the extension, if you haven't specified what internal fittings/switches you want, it's not really his problem is it.

Yep, first things first, get a price.

At 1K I would say he is in the right ball park.

You see the problem is people expect a bit of wire and a few switches all fitted expertly and safely to be peanuts, the skill time and effort to do this also needs paying.

Think to yourself, how much am I spending on the Kitchen? and the decor and the building work.

Then stand back and think if a cow boy had done this electrical work and the place burn't to the ground what would you have left to look at??

Chew your builder a bit (thou I suspect he may be blameless) and learn to ask for a price before work commences

Yo Steffer!

It is not clear in your question whether the electrician supplied the parts (eg the sockets, kitchen lights, wall lights, centre light etc)? Or did you supply these items and so the cost from the electrician is solely for 'fitting'? Surely this makes a big difference to the price you have to pay? If you can confirm this people can offer you better advice on how much you should expect to pay.

 8)

i did a similar job. When i turned up to do the job i was asked to do downlights instead of ceiling roses and the sockets and switches were not white ones they had changed to graphite ones at 4.95+v each !!
