having recently had a problem with a dbl radiator that was newly fitted (it was hot at top but only just over warm at bottom ) & having tried all other options, i have now had a power flush done( from the connections by the hot water tank in the airing cupboard)...but does the following seem correct...engineers turned up..turned off mains water straight away....drained all the radiators etc...then proceeded with the power flush ( i was not at hand so have no ideas exactly what they did) the total time they spent here was approx 2hrs..i did say i thought a power flush took a lot longer..but they assured me that as the water was relatively clear & clean that it had been done correctly..does this sound as though it was done correctly ?..as i have no idea & can only take them at there word

many many thanks in advance for any replies to this question

There's no real hard and fast definition.
I took a flusher to a flat recently where the boiler was coming out after 23 years. The water was spotless!

You never know when you start. Sometimes you can charge less if it's that clean, but if you've travelled a long way, half a day spare isn't much good to you.

You might juust have a balancing problem. See Faq.

As Chris said, it all depends on how dirty the system was, and how many rads you have. Having said that, 2 hours seems awfully quick.

just out of curiosity ....the new rad that is playing up had a new thermostatic valve fitted also...i have just this minute turned that on and off several times very quickly..and lo and behold the rad got very hot all over..does that valve control the water flow in/out ? if so could the turning it on and off several times quickly somehow have either temporarily removed a blockage/sludge or could it be a faulty valve..or even both ?, also surely if i have had a proper power flush there should be no sludge should there ? i will try the balancing option soon..but wondered if what i say now could get me some more help or advice...many thanks again in advance

If you didn't bother balancing the system then don't expect the all the radiators to heat up evenly. Perhaps other TRV's have shut down the rads in the rooms now up to temperature and hence the new rad is working.

Appears the powerflush (whether done properly or not) was not required.

If you had a proper powerflush done, or rather done by proper engineers, they will/would have balanced the system. One of the reasons I think 2 hours is too quick

hi again...i am now in the process of contacting the engineers again to ask why the system was not balanced either when new rad was fitted or after power flush..i am not still 100% sure a proper power flush was done due to the quickness of it ( there is still dirtyish water coming from rads when bleeding..that normal after a power flush? also as i said in a previous post..the mains water was turned off immediately before any work & only turned on when i was told power flush was finished...if thats the case then what was used to flush out pipes? or is water not needed to be pushed thru pipes& rads to perform a power flush... as i have no idea how a power flush is done.. any information would be greatly appreciated..thank you

Without mains on, you can not do a proper powerflush. Rinsing takes lots of water. After powerflush, the water is so clean that you would need to draw off water in a container to see the colour, and it stays that way. If done properly.

It takes the best part of a day to do a powerflush PROPERLY

It takes at least an hour to set up and remove the machine

The machine is a large container with a handle and has at least 3 pipes connected to it .it has a pump in it and can create a fair amount of noise

so then...as i was the one who turned off the mains water ( at the engineers request) they then drained the system then proceeded to do my "power flush"with the mains water still turned off..so it is totally not possible to do a power flush with the mains turned off then ? i really need to know my arguing/rights point on this..so there is no new type of way of doing a power flush ..like a updated version or a new invented way where as the mains could be turned off and a power flush done ? sorry to have to ask to be so sure but i do not want to be conned/ripped off in paying for something that could not possibly be done if mains were turned off..thanks again in advance
